The Abbot Cellach pursues his ambition to fortify Kells against the Viking invaders. Against the protests of Brother Aidan, he insists that the closer the north men come, the higher the walls must grow. Aidan laments the loss of the Abbot’s once famous drawing skill beneath his fears for the safety of the town.
The walls of the Abbot’s Room reflect the Abbot’s own creativity and past as an illuminator through the complex but beautiful patterns and plans. This scene also displays the contrasting manners of the Abbot, reflected in a Gothic style, and Aidan, who is represented by Romanesque styles.
